Biography
Oscillating between abstraction and representation Gommaar works on large-scale textural paintings. Inspired by American Abstract Expressionism and figurative European symbolism , Belgian artist Gommaar Gilliams has emerged by his playful use of materiality and texture: use of collage and oil stick, usually upon a patchwork-style canvas.

Gilliams casts a spell of poetic and allegorical narratives visions of a dreamlike, nostalgia-laden utopia: The symbols in his works refer to a world characterized by melancholy, desire, and the duality between day and night.

Gilliams earned a master’s degree in painting from PXL University of Applied Sciences and Arts studying with fellow Belgian artist Koen van den Broek.
