For this edition of 1-54 New York from May 1st to May 4th, Nil Gallery invites us to dive into a visual journey that celebrates the richness and dynamism of the contemporary African art scene. The French gallery showcases the visionary works by Sara Benabdallah (Morocco), Nabil El Makhloufi (Morocco), Slimen Elkamel (Tunisia) and Caleb Kwarteng Prah (Ghana), each offering fresh insights into the African cultural landscape.
Both from Morocco, Sara Benabdallah and Nabil El Makhloufi use photography and painting to probe the depths of female empowerment, identity, and migration. Benabdallah's evocative photography challenges societal and patriarchal norms and beckons viewers to reimagine the world anew. She displays her personal representation of women in order to give voice to the feminine narrative silenced by society’s rules. El Makhloufi's paintings invite reflection on double identity and migration, drawing viewers into a realm of vibrant colors and profound realism.
Meanwhile, Kwarteng Prah and Elkamel, both dig into the past in order to construct and nourish their practices of contemporary art. Caleb Kwarteng Prah's archival imagery pays homage to the Ghanaian working class, while Slimen Elkamel's pointillist paintings celebrate Tunisian tradition with captivating storytelling. Both Elkamel and Kwarteng Prah draw inspiration from Africa’s personal and collective history in order to explore contemporary creation, offering nuanced reflections on cultural representation.
